Visegrad Group (V4)
The Visegrad Group (V4) is a platform for cooperation between Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. Since 1 May 2004, when the V4 countries jointly joined the European Union, the group has served as a forum for coordinating actions within European and transatlantic institutions. The V4 complements existing regional structures and encourages cooperation with neighboring countries. Its goal is to strengthen stability and democracy in Europe and to build security through complementary and coordinated collaboration.
For official statistics, V4 means the systematic exchange of experience, the alignment of methods, the development of common positions, as well as the promotion of shared values and the exchange of information. The current statistical cooperation within the V4 was consolidated by an agreement between the presidents of the statistical offices on 19 April 2018, initiated by the Hungarian presidency (Memorandum of Understanding). The V4 presidency is rotational and lasts for 12 months—from 1 July to 30 June. The country holding the presidency sets the work plan, coordinates meetings, and represents the group in contacts with partners. Since the signing of the agreement, a joint publication has also been issued each year, coordinated by the statistical office of the country holding the presidency.

Poland’s Presidency of the V4 Group (July 2024 – June 2025)
From July 2024 to June 2025, Poland held the presidency of the Visegrad Group for the second time. In addition to publishing a joint report, statistical cooperation during this presidency also included the organization of two expert meetings.
The first workshop took place in Warsaw on 20–21 May 2025 and focused on the implementation of the regulation on European population and housing statistics (ESOP) and the future of population censuses in the V4 countries.
The second workshop was held in Rzeszów on 5–6 June 2025 and was dedicated to Cross-Border Functional Areas (TOF) and cooperation among local governments. Representatives of the Carpathian Euroregion and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism also participated.
Why is this important?
- The Visegrad Group countries are connected not only by shared history, geographical proximity, and economic cooperation, but also by long-standing collaboration between their statistical offices, which began in the previous century. Before joining the European Union, between 1993 and 2004, the V4 members published joint quarterly bulletins containing key indicators for each country.
- The Visegrad Group countries account for more than one-eighth of the area of the European Union and about one-seventh of its population. Together, they generate around 8% of the EU’s GDP, produce over one-fifth of the Union’s cereals, and contribute more than 10% of the EU’s manufacturing industry.
- The Memorandum of Understanding enables the development of more efficient cooperation in the exchange of information, broadens the scope for sharing views and experiences, and allows for better alignment of methodological solutions developed in the individual V4 countries.
