European Commission Grants
With the political and economic transformation after 1989, Polish official statistics launched an intensive process of change, first adapting to the conditions of a market economy and later—during the preparations for accession to the European Union—to EU standards. Already during the accession process, Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny) benefited from financial support under programmes such as PHARE or Transition Facility, aimed at countries aspiring to join the Community.
Since Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004, Statistics Poland has continued to develop research tools and methodologies using financial resources from the European Commission dedicated to statistical research and development work. In response to evolving requirements and the growing need for harmonisation of European statistics, we carry out ongoing adaptation activities and develop new research areas—including experimental ones—within grant projects. For many years, we have successfully secured EU funding for numerous initiatives, as confirmed by positive evaluations from the assessment committee.
We implement projects not only within national teams, but also in international expert groups (multi-beneficiary projects), in which Statistics Poland acts both as a partner and as a leader. International projects, in which we apply pioneering methods and tools, are of particular importance for introducing innovations in European statistics in a rapidly changing global environment.
The activities we undertake support the development of modern methods for collecting, processing, and disseminating data, contributing to the implementation of the European Statistical System strategy and to increasing the comparability, quality, and usefulness of statistical data across the EU.
Examples of our areas of activity include:
- Geospatial statistics (GEOSTAT – Geostatistics Portal).
- Innovative methods of processing and analysing large volumes of BigData[SI1] in public administration.
- Trusted Smart Statistics.
- Monitoring energy efficiency for climate neutrality (ODYSSEE-MURE).
- Social protection and comparison of social security systems.
- Coherence and quality of national business registers and the EuroGroup Register.
- Interdisciplinary methods of data collection with particular focus on privacy and data security.
- Effective communication methods for statistics tailored to various user groups in the context of digital transformation.
Statistics Poland also acts as an international coordinator of grant activities. An example is the research project Trusted Smart Statistics, whose objective is to create the Web Intelligence Network Network (WIN) – an analytical environment that uses online data (including job advertisements, real estate data, and tourism information) to develop experimental statistics. The project brings together experts from many EU countries who jointly develop methods, tools, and principles for working with internet data, creating modern solutions for official statistics.
Participation in grant projects directly contributes to the development of the competencies of Statistics Poland experts. The experience gained influences not only the direction of European statistical development, but also strengthens the image of Statistics Poland as a mature institution, aware of its role and significance in the international arena.
