New Roles of National Statistical Institutes
Official statistics now represent only a fraction of the information available to the public. The growing volume of data from multiple sources is transforming national information systems and reshaping the role of national statistical institutes. To maintain order in the information space, their coordination function — defined in European law — is gradually expanding and evolving. Statistical offices are no longer just producers of official, comparable data. They are becoming modern hubs of information and analysis. The data they provide are not only reliable but also accessible, visually engaging and layered, supporting analysis, decision-making and evidence-based policymaking, and more broadly — strengthening understanding of social and economic realities.
Polish official statistics do more than ensure information quality. They also invest in building internal skills and strengthening users’ ability to work with data, boosting what is commonly referred to as “statistical literacy”. To support this, the system uses modern dissemination tools such as dashboards, infographics, interactive digital publications and metadata resources. Through participation in bodies such as the High-Level Group for the Modernisation of Official Statistics (HLG-MOS) and in educational programmes, Statistics Poland exchanges experience with international partners. The resulting shared solutions drive the transformation of official statistics and help the system respond to global trends and emerging challenges.
